Pop's Retreat

Quiet time is the right time for family.

Information that will assist you in planning your visit to Pop’s Retreat.

Information

Bring your family!  You can enjoy fishing, swimming, or just “doing nothing.”  Local outfitters offer canoes if you’re interested in a beautiful paddling experience in the seclusion of the back country.

Canoe rentals are available at James River Outfitters (417/357-6443) and Y Bridge Canoe Rental (417/357-1502).

Family Information

Historically, the James River has been more popular with fisherman than with paddlers.  South of Springfield, the river winds back and forth between majestic bluffs and rocky points before flowing into Table Rock Lake.  It is a beautiful and serene river flowing through remote portions of the Ozarks.

James River Information

This rugged area is characterized by lofty hills, deep valleys, cold clear springs and streams, large caves, and a unique cultural tradition.  Early settlers were attracted to the Ozarks because game, fish and timber were abundant.  Rough-hewn cabins, rail fences, one-room schools, and native stone churches are sought out by artists, photographers, and tourists.

To those who are most unfamiliar with the real and rustic atmosphere of the Ozarks, there are novels and postcards that make it suddenly come alive.  And it doesn’t take much of that good, hard cider to convince a person that the Ozarks are great for just plain, comfortable living…

Ozark Information

Whether you’re interested in bass fishing, fly fishing, or like the bigger fish such as spoonbill (also known as paddlefish), the James River abounds with fish—large and small.  There is something for everyone—bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill—the list goes on!  Fishing licenses are available (and necessary).  After a hard day of fishing, you can fry them up over a campfire, while listening to the wash of water over the rocks.
